Street Inventories
Road managers should have an inventory of their streets in order to prioritize needs for rehabilitation projects. A basic inventory will include street segments, street dimensions, type of pavement, the pavement condition, and a field for general comments. The inventory may also include fields for calculating quantities and budgeting.
It is important that streets be properly spelled and street suffixes are recorded in a uniform manner. Pavement types should be described in a uniform way and pavement condition ratings should be consistent. Agencies use various rating systems, however the PASER system developed by the University of Wisconsin (which rates streets on a 1 to 10 scale) is easy to use, can be easily explained to constituents and is free. Informative manuals can be downloaded from the PASER web site.
